Mikumi National Park

Mikumi is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park. It’s also the most accessible from Dar es Salaam. With almost guaranteed wildlife sightings, it makes an ideal safari destination for those without much time.

Mikumi National Park

Mikumi national park holds a diverse number of wildlife, large herds of Elephants, Buffalos, Zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, Leopards, Lions, Sable Antelopes, Greater Kudu, Baboons, impalas and more than 400 species of birds. As this National park shares the same ecosystem with Selous Game Reserve herds of elephants, zebras and buffaloes migrate to and from the northern part of the game reserve into the national park.

Mikumi National Park borders the Selous Game Reserve and Udzungwa National Park, and the three locations make a varied and pleasant safari circuit.

Mikumi Ecosystem

Mikumi is of great biological significance, representing species The Park experiences two rainfall seasons, short rains starting from October to early November and long rains from March to May. Dry season is from late June to September and December to February Mikumi National Park is easily accessible using the Dar – Zambia highway. Mikumi National Park is only 3-4 hrs from Dar es Salaam.

Facts about Mikumi

Mikumi National Park Mikumi was gazetted as a National Park in 1964. Mikumi national park is named after the popular dominant Palm tree species that is commonly found at the park called Borrassus Spp. The tree is exceptional in that it grew at the park but with no stems seen from anywhere in the village. The park also shares its name with the village which is named after the park.

The golden grasslands of north-western Mikumi provide the stage for a wonderful concentration of mammals, birds and reptiles, while the impenetrable forests and mountains to the south-east border the vast Selous.

The Mikumi National Park near Morogoro, Tanzania, was established in 1964. It covers an area of 3,230 km2 is the fourth largest in the country. The park is crossed by Tanzania’s A-7 highway.

The Mikumi belongs to the circuit of the wildlife parks of Tanzania, less visited by international tourists and better protected from the environmental point of view. Most of the routes that cross the Mikumi proceed in the direction of the Ruaha National Park and the Selous. The recommended season for visiting the park is the dry season between May and November, warm weather and beautiful sites that are a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
